Note: This is the 2nd reflection in a series inspired by Self-Unfoldment by Swami Chinmayananda.
In today’s world, we are surrounded by luxuries and conveniences that can enhance our daily lives. Yet, paradoxically, many of us find ourselves struggling with feelings of dissatisfaction and anxiety. This discrepancy between our material wealth and emotional well-being presents a profound contradiction in our lives.
The crux of this issue stems from our constant chase after fleeting desires, often fueled by a lack of self-control. We all crave freedom, but we often push back against the very boundaries that could lead us to a deeper, more lasting happiness.

But why do we resist these helpful restrictions, even when they’re in our best interest? It often comes down to our struggle with managing our impulses. We want things that, in the long run, aren’t good for us. One must ponder: is that really freedom?
The wise philosophers and thinkers of the past have pointed out that our minds can become restless when we chase every desire without any sense of discipline. So, how can we work towards a more meaningful, enduring happiness?
Indulging in every whim that crosses our minds cannot equate to true freedom; rather, it is a form of licentiousness that can lead to emptiness. Genuine freedom is deeply rooted in intelligent self-restraint. What, then, is the role of self-control in enjoying the bounties of life? Overindulgence often leads us to unhappiness. By setting guidelines and boundaries for ourselves, we can foster a deeper and more enduring happiness, one that is built on a foundation of freedom and discipline.
Self-Unfoldment #3: Freedom – Reflections Along The Way
Self-control is essential for maintaining order and enjoying the freedoms we cherish. Ultimately, true happiness resides not in the absence of restrictions but in finding a delicate balance between our desires and self-regulation. By embracing the power of self-discipline, we can create a life brimming with joy, fulfillment, and a sense of purpose.
As we ponder these concepts, let us reflect on specific areas within our lives where we could benefit from enhanced self-control. Consider the positive transformations that could arise from such deliberate practices. Let us embark on a journey to uncover the profound impact of intelligent discipline on our overall happiness.
