Finding Joy Beyond External Influences

,

Note: This is the 4th reflection in a series inspired by Self-Unfoldment by Swami Chinmayananda.

The essence of a human being is independence. A person who is not dependent on the world for his/her joy is truly independent. If we rely on the world for our happiness, we find ourselves tossed up and down by its ever-changing nature.

The teachings of Vedanta provide a timeless path for mastering the mind and embracing lasting happiness. The key is to detach from worldly dependencies, enabling us to remain calm amid external chaos. The journey toward independence from the world for our joy involves discovering our true nature—a process known as Self-Unfoldment.

Many of us have been conditioned to seek happiness in possessions, relationships, or achievements. However, these sources of happiness are fleeting and leave us feeling adrift in the tides of life. True freedom lies in recognizing our blissful nature, which exists independently of external influences.

Vedanta emphasizes the importance of detaching from external sources of joy, encouraging us to identify with the unchanging essence within us. This shift in perspective allows us to rise above temporary joys and sorrows, leading us to everlasting happiness.

Self-Unfoldment #5: Our Heritage Reflections Along The Way

An enlightened being is someone who has gained mastery over their mind and remains at peace, regardless of the world’s changes. Such individuals do not become overwhelmed by emotions because they understand the temporary nature of external circumstances. By mastering the mind, we can engage with life without being enslaved by it, experiencing joy irrespective of what happens around us.

The human experience primarily consists of the body, mind, intellect, and the life principle which gives life to the three equipments—body, mind, and intellect each with its own functions. The body perceives and acts, the mind feels emotions, and the intellect entertains thoughts and ideas. While it is natural to use these faculties, we must not allow ourselves to be overwhelmed by them. By not being influenced by emotions, perceptions, or thoughts, we can achieve true independence. This independence is our true human heritage.

Let us embark on a journey of self-discovery and tap into the calm depths within ourselves. The journey towards mastering the mind is a journey towards reclaiming our divine heritage—freeing ourselves from worldly dependence and finding joy in the unchanging reality that is the substratum for all changes.
