Note: This is the 8th reflection in a series inspired by Self-Unfoldment by Swami Chinmayananda.
Life is a series of experiences we have when we interact with the world. Scientists, economists, and politicians have worked diligently to shape our current environment, providing us with many comforts in the hopes of bringing us happiness. Yet, true happiness often seems to slip away from us. Instead, we find ourselves facing stress and feelings of unfulfillment. Why is this the case?
The root of the problem is the imbalance created when our ability to control our external circumstances exceeds our ability to manage our inner selves. Religion and philosophy focus on nurturing our inner personalities, aiming to establish a balance between our outer and inner natures.

Objective scientists, like economists and politicians, focus on enhancing our external environment. Meanwhile, subjective scientists delve into the human personality, guiding us toward inner fulfillment. Both objective and subjective scientists play crucial roles in creating a harmonious society. Material growth raises our standard of living, whereas inner development or spirituality enhances our standard of life.
Just as a ship’s mast must be balanced by a deep keel to maintain stability, our standard of living must align with our standard of life. Striking a balance between these two aspects is vital for leading lives filled with joy and contentment. If we tip the scales too far in one direction, we might end up facing challenges—both individually and as a community.
Self-Unfoldment #10: Balance – Reflections Along The Way
Let us take the time to reflect on our own lives and consider how we can nurture that inner peace despite the hustle and bustle around us. By finding a way to harmonize our material successes with our inner calm, we can turn stress into joy and create a life that’s truly fulfilling.
