Understanding Vasanas: Key to Personal Transformation

,

Note: This is the 12th reflection in a series inspired by Self-Unfoldment by Swami Chinmayananda.

In our journey through life, we encounter countless objects, situations, and choices. The key to navigating this complex world lies not in the events themselves, but in how we choose to respond. At the heart of effective decision-making is our intellect, which needs accurate information to function well. Our minds process the sensory input we receive, and if our mental state is unsteady, the data becomes muddied, leading to confusing choices. In contrast, a calm mind cuts through the noise, providing the clarity we need to make sound decisions.

Our mental and intellectual capabilities are influenced by innate tendencies called vasanas, which are impressions from past actions motivated by selfishness. These deep-seated tendencies shape our behavior and decisions, impacting our thoughts and actions involuntarily. In Sanskrit, “vasana” means fragrance, and each individual has unique vasanas that shape their personality.

Vasanas manifest as desires within our intellect, stirring emotional thoughts that compel us to act. This internal yearning can lead to mental turbulence, continuously creating new vasanas in a relentless cycle. Vasanas can be categorized into three types:

  1. Lokavasanas (social urges): These drive us to conform to societal norms and popular opinions.
  2. Dehavasanas (physical urges): These keep our focus on bodily needs, often making us slaves to our desires.
  3. Shastravasanas (urge to know): These fuel our insatiable quest for knowledge, whether it’s science, spirituality, or any field that ignites our curiosity.

Self-Unfoldment #16: Vasanas Reflections Along The Way

Each person’s unique combination of vasanas influences their character, and collectively define communities, nations, and ultimately the world. By working on our own vasanas, we can contribute to a more harmonious world. Self-improvement fosters collective transformation, the journey to world peace begins within each of us.

The path of self-realization involves transcending the limitations of body, mind, and intellect. Vasanas obscure our perception of the divine self, creating a veil of ignorance (avidya) that leads us to misidentify with our limited personalities. To progress, we must shift our focus from external distractions to our higher nature, allowing our true selves to emerge.

Self-realization isn’t about finding a hidden self; it’s about peeling away the layers of ignorance that cloud our true nature. This profound journey requires effort and the courage to change our inner lives. It involves exhausting the vasanas that bind us, paving the way for genuine spiritual growth.

The ego, or jiva, is conditioned by the body, mind, and intellect. Just as a dirty mirror distorts a reflection, our minds need to be cleansed to realize our true nature. Spiritual growth isn’t just a matter of gaining knowledge; it’s about living intentionally and consciously. Recognizing our vasanas empowers us to choose our actions thoughtfully, breaking free from the cycles of desire fueled by past impressions. This heightened awareness allows us to transcend our limitations and discover our true nature—OM.
