Note: This is the 18th reflection in a series inspired by Self-Unfoldment by Swami Chinmayananda.
While satyam , brahmacharya, and ahimsa are essential values to have a peaceful and fulfilling life, they alone do not guarantee success. True achievement requires conscious decision-making—a willingness to rise above our beyond our innate impulses. Unlike plants and animals, which function within the limits of predetermined laws, we possess the unique ability to rise above these constraints through mindfulness and deliberate choice.
Efficiency is the freedom to channel our inherent abilities dynamically and joyfully in the field of action. Genius is not a gift reserved only for a few; it is the natural outcome of self-discipline and purposeful effort. It emerges when we discover the source of dynamism that is within ourselves and learn to use it wisely. This happens in three stages: generating, conserving, and directing our inner dynamism toward meaningful goals.
Higher ideals help sustain our enthusiasm and maintain steady progress over time. The right mindset preserves our vital energy and transforms inspiration into consistent effort. When our actions—physical, emotional, or intellectual—are performed with the wrong attitude, they return to us agitation, regret, or remorse, dissipating our inner strength.
Self-Unfoldment #23: Efficiency – Dexterity in Action – Reflections Along The Way
Actions that leave us with regret are known as papa (sins), while those that bring inner alignment and peace are known as punya (meritorious actions). Our mental states—heaven and hell—are self-created, shaped entirely by our attitudes and the quality of our actions.
Ultimately, actions transcend beyond labels of “good” or “bad”. What truly matters is the intention behind them. When we choose kindness, love, and peace over greed, hate, and jealousy, we refine our personality and align ourselves with positive energy. Such alignment prevents the energy leakages that weakens our motivation and hinder progress.
Scriptures and the teachings of our gurus illuminate the path to noble living. By reflecting on their profound insights and consistently exposing ourselves to their wisdom, we can replace detrimental tendencies with healthier patterns of thought. This steady practice not only strengthens but also purifies our character, enabling us to navigate life with greater clarity, awareness, and purpose.
True fulfillment is not a one-time accomplishment but an ongoing journey—one that requires conscious effort, reflection, and inner refinement. By embracing these principles, we can awaken our inner genius and rise, transcend the limitations of our nature, and attain lasting success and happiness. Though the path may be challenging, the rewards of conscious living and mindful choices are immeasurable.
Let us stay vigilant about where our energy flows and commit to conserving it for higher, purposeful pursuits.
